For some time now Dreamweaver from Macromedia is the de facto standard WYSIWYG HTML editor for the Mac … doesent meen we love it, especially the slowness and unstableness with big files was often a negative point brought up by it’s users. Personally I’m writing most of my HTML code by hand in a simple text editor, but from time to time I’m still using a WYSIWYG editor, so I started to search for a Dreamweaver alternative and I must say, Dreamweaver has become a real rival, a free open source application by the name Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a “new view”).
Nvu was started by Linspire. It’s basicaly an evolution of the HTML editor found in the Mozilla Internet Suite (Mozilla Composer). If you previously used Dreamweaver, the switch to Nvu is really easy. I would’nt call Nvu a Dreamweaver clone, but there are enough similarities to make the switch extremly uncomplicated and hassle free. The release of Version 1.0 is scheduled for the 2nd quarter of 2005, but you can already download the beta. By the way a beta that already feels much more stable than the latest release version of Dreamweaver, so don’t worry about giving the beta a try, I’m sure you will like the app as well.

I’ve been testing this app for about a year in linux, and while it still could improve, it sure is the best thing around on linux. Nice to see it work its way up on the mac platform too.

There are still some features I would love to see, but for what I need a WYSIWYG editor, it’s almost perfect.

That looks brilliant, much better than what I’m currently using (Dreamweaver 3), the layout is nice and looks more helpful than DW.
