All modern web-browsers have a search field, but if you use the internet a lot, one search engine normaly is’nt enough. In Firefox you can add more search engines to your search-box and than select one of them with a drop-down menu before you enter the searchterm. Better, but still not perfect. What if we could use the search-box like a command line? For example if we want to search something with Google, we could just write “g searchterm” and if we want to search something in the Wikipedia Encyclopedia we could type “wp searchterm“. How would that be? Yeah, you would need to memorize some commands, but using the web would defenitly become more effective this way.
Now this is actualy already possible with yubnub, the social command line for the web! You can easely install the command line into Firefox (install intructions) and a bit harder into Safari. Hey, there’s even a dashboard widget for us OS X users. A list of the most used commands can be found here and if you think there’s one missing, just add it over here.
Of course there’s already a command to search this blog as well, just type “osx searchterm” into your yubnub command line and it will do a search through all the OS X Code (r,s) blog posts. Cool!
Edit: There’s a plugin for Safari that does something very similar, just without the need of a web service powering it, so you can create your very own personal commands. The plugin is called Sogudi. More informations about it can be found over here. (Thx Felix)

I use Sogudi for some time now to do this too, for the Safari browser. It basically does the same as you describe.

Wow cool. I don’t use Safari because of the pmd|arcade extension a friend made for my open-source community app, but I will add it to my post, I’m sure there are visitors that will use it.

Opera has the same functionality built in - at least it has on windows, I guess their mac version is similar?

I only use Opera to test sites for compatibility with it … but I will have a look at it tomorrow. Thx for the info.

I’m grateful to Aaron Ransley for writing the YubNub Firefox search plugin. That has helped a lot of people to enjoy YubNub.
