Do you need a name for a new character in a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game)? Or for a project you’re working on? Or even worse, for a .com domain? I’m sure you know the situation when all the great names are already taken and you just can’t come up with a free one that you actually could like. Frustrating, isn’t it? Hey, maybe an OS X application or a web-service can help you out.
First let’s have a look at NameMaker. NameMaker is a small open source application that uses rule-files to generate names. For an application that has not seen any development since 2002, without it’s own homepage and still a beta release, for such an unsupported application it’s surprising how good the results are. Additionally to the names you can create with the included rule-files you can create your own rule-files and come up with completely unique names.
No luck with NameMaker? Than you may like the website Language Is A Virus, especially the Character Name Generator. Don’t forget to check their other services as well, some of them are quite interesting and well worth a look.
