Do you have a girlfriend? Than you may want to impress her on a romantic starry night with your knowledge about the stars and constellations above you (just don’t forget to tell her that she’s the brightness one of them). Now how do you get that knowledge? You could get some books, but as you’re a Mac user, there’s something much better, a virtual, explorable 3D sky simulation by the name Stellarium. Some of the features:
- Over 120000 stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue with name and info for the brightest ones.
- Planets and major satellites in real time (with position computation accurate enough for eclipse or transit simulation).
- Asterisms of the 88 constellations with their names.
- Mythological figures of the 88 constellations.
- Images of more than 70 nebulas (Orion, M31 etc..).
- Photo-realistic Milky Way.
The best thing? Stellarium is as free as the sky above you! Just download and start exploring. It’s definitely worth a look even if you don’t have a girlfriend.
