If you’re a professional photographer and a Mac user that makes hundreds of digital shots each day, than I’m sure you’re as exited as me about yesterdays Media Event. Not only did Apple reduce the price of the beautiful Cinema displays, showed a quad G5 that is nearly two times as fast as the previously fastest Mac, finally featuring PCI-Express and DDR2, most importantly, Apple made an application just for you, the professional photographer.
The name of the app is Aperture and not as some have speculated previously to the event, it isn’t a Photoshop killer or tries to be one. The app is more like an iPhoto for pros, an app to manage all your photos and to fine-tune them. The key features of Aperture are a non-destructive RAW workflow, professional project management, smart and intuitive compare and select tools and the possibility to create customizable contact sheets, books and web galleries. Apple made some really nice tour movies, so before I try to explain everything with my own words, just have a look at them, they show you more as a thousand words could tell.
Now before you buy Aperture for your “outdated” G4 Mac; while it should run on a G4 with a good gfx card and a minimum of 1GB RAM, the recommended system specs are a dual G5, 2GB of RAM and a high-end gfx card. However, if you’re really a professional photographer, than you should definitely have the money to get some nice new hardware together with the app. How about something like this:
- 2.5GHz Quad-core PowerPC G5
- 4GB 533 DDR2 4×1GB
- 2 x 500GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
- QUADRO FX 4500 512MB SDRAM
- 2 x Apple Cinema HD Display 30″
For as much as $11,522.- … a real dream machine. Trust me, you’ll get a lifelong ad banner on my blog if you buy me that system together with a Canon EOS 20D.
