Virtue, a Desktop Manager fork, was a very popular virtual desktop manager for Panther (OS X 10.3), but sadly the app has never seen a version able to run on Tiger (OS X 10.4) … till now. Thanks to Tony Arnold, Virtue can now ride the Tiger. The port isn’t complete, but at least usable enough to make a lot of old Virtue users happy. There are a few features that currently doesn’t work, like the desktop label option or adding of hotkey combos to virtual desktops, but the port seams to be on a good path overall. Some comments from the new author (don’t contact the old authors if something doesn’t work):
Back under Panther, we Mac users had two very good options for virtual desktops on our small screens: Desktop Manager - the grand-daddy of all Mac desktop switchers, and Virtue Desktops - a flashy, feature-packed fork of Desktop Manager. Personally, I didn’t get much of a chance to play with Virtue due to my involvement in the testing of Tiger, but people constantly touted it’s features and told me I should try it – that’s a little hard when the application didn’t even start under Tiger.
Well, now it does. I’m happy with the feature set that Desktop Manager provides, and I like it’s simplicity, but there a couple of things I have found in Virtue that I think (when they work) could be very, very useful. I could wait for Rich to update Desktop Manager, but he appears to have disappeared into a complex maze of study, Linux and the so-called “real world™”. So I decided to do it myself.
Sounds good. Let’s hope he’ll be able to fix the currently broken features so we finally have a complete Virtue back on the latest version of OS X.

SourceForge has already moved Virtue to a new web spot and now I can’t even access this. Here’s the URL where I was directed:
http://virtuedesktops.info/
Maybe it’s filtered out where I work, or maybe this is so new that it’s not really working quite yet, and it will work for you. Best of luck.
