I’m not a fan of big tools like Iconographer or IconBuilder to create icons for an application. These tools may be a good choice for someone that creates icons all day long, but if you just need to create an icon once in a while, you’re much better suited with something simple, something without tons of features you don’t need anyway. Many already have an image creation application they know how to use and the only thing they really need is a tool to convert their images into an icon.
Iconverter is such an application. Just design your 128×128 pixel big icon in a tool like Photoshop, Illustrator or any other such application you like and export the image as a 24 bit png with alpha channel, drop it over this tool and your icon is ready. You can even use the tool to extract the icon of another application first if you don’t want to start from scratch. Additionally to the preferred png images, you can use icns, gif, jpg, bmp, tiff and ico files, however, for OS X icons you should use a format that supports an alpha channel as you normally don’t want to create a totally square icon.
