For too long evil applications have now taken away your precious CPU cycles. It’s time to stand up and do something against them. Words alone aren’t enough anymore; it’s time to act. It’s your Mac after all and only you should have control over it! Only you should decide which app can use the CPU and when!
Ok, ok, enough of this revolution talk, I actually just want to show you an interesting status bar application by the name App Stop. The app lets you freeze, resume, and set priorities for your applications. Here’s a detailed feature list:
- Ability to force quit any application, even if it is running as root.
- Ability to change the priority on any application, even if it is running as root
- Ability to pause/continue any application, even if it is running as root
- Background process support
- Table view for batch pausing, force quitting, and priority changing of applications
- Auto-hide on application pause
- Auto-show on application continue
- Menu-bar icon change when applications are paused
- Ability to float the table view over all windows
- CPU usage reporting for all applications, even if they are running as root
Pretty sweet and really useful if you have to pause a CPU intensive application, for example if you’re rendering a 3D scene and a client wants something from you. The app is open source, so get it and start taking back control over your machine.

Very useful app. I find it is faster at stopping iTunes then moving to the second desktop and hitting stop/pause. The table view makes it very easy to renice a process (good for background processes like QuickSilver or ClamAV)
