Let’s say you have iTunes running on a Mac mini in your living room (just an example), with loudspeakers in your whole apartment. Now of course with such a setup you want to control iTunes from every room of your apartment and not just from the Mac mini in your living room. How do you do that? There are three applications I know of that let you do this:
netTunes ($19.95): This little app lets you control iTunes running on one Macintosh from another, using iTunes’ native interface. You get the same main window, the same playlists, the same capabilities - everything! However, while the interface is definitely nice, it runs only on a Mac so you can’t use a PC, a PSP, a cell phone or a PDA to control your tunes.
PatioTunes ($15): This cool app lets you control iTunes from a browser, so you don’t need a Mac, everything that can access your wireless network with a browser, like a PSP for example can be used. PatioTunes is very simple to install and the browser based control panel is nice and feature rich.
browserTunes (free): This one is free and works similar like PatioTunes. It doesn’t have such a feature rich interface, but it’s free. There’s one downside, development and support of browserTunes has been suspended indefinitely, so if something doesn’t work, there’s nobody going to fix it for you. However, it works great for me, so definitely give it a try.
