Pseudo copies for real searches

pseudo copy

Do you use multiple Macs? Did you ever move files from your computers harddisk to an external medium (CD, DVD, backup device …) because you’ve run out of free space? Now what if you need to search for files on one of those external mediums or that other Mac in your office? What if you don’t even know if the file you search is on that external Mac, your PowerBook, your iMac at home or one of those backup discs? This is either extremely tricky or very time consuming as you could imagine, but it doesn’t have to.

Touvaly is a small utility to create pseudo copies of files, folders, CD’s and volumes. Now how does that help us? The pseudo copies aren’t real copies, basically the files still have all the usual attributes (creation date, modification date, type, creator, name, etc.) but they are completely empty. This makes the pseudo copy small enough to store them on all of your Macs. For example with the above situation, you would create a folder on each of your machines called something like “pseudo copies” and in there you place all the pseudo copies of all the other machines and external discs. Now when you do a search, all this files will be searched as well and the path tells you on which machine they are. While this is definitely not the perfect solution, maybe one single file and a Spotlight plugin would be better, but the concept is definitely interesting and should actually solve the problem described above.
