Mac users are really not known for overclocking their hardware, so maybe it is a good idea to start with a warning:
The following software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. If you destroy your costly 9800 Pro or your now worthless Rage 128 because of a bug in this program or your careless utilization of it, you’re on your own!
Now of course that’s not because the software is badly written, overclocking is always dangerous, even without any bugs in the software, and should only be done if you really can’t life with some extra speed in GPU intensive applications (mostly games) and if you have enough money to buy a new graphics card if something goes wrong. Wikipedia has some good advices on this topic, definitely check them out first.
I currently only know of a software to overclock ATI cards, so no overclocking fun if you’re using a Nvidia GPU … maybe better for you. The application, a preference pane, to overclock ATI cards is ATIccelerator II. Here are the apps features:
- no potentially dangerous flashing required
- no cumbersome three-steps process (dump, modify, then reflash ROM)
- no need to reboot for every frequency change
- no OS 9 required (that’s right, G5s and other recent OS 9-free Macs are now supported!)
Again, you’ve been warned! Don’t come back and blame me if your GPU melted down after using this application.
