When the fireworks stop and the smoke clears, it would be a great weekend to look at our beautiful summer skies. Pocket Universe [App Store] is a US$2.99 app that has been updated to make star finding easier for those that have a new iPhone 3GS.
The app uses the position sensors and the compass to orient your phone to match the real sky. As you turn or tilt the phone, the sky map changes to give you a very accurate picture of where you are pointing, with lots of labels and links to more information. This is one of the first examples of an augmented reality app to hit the platform since the introduction of the 3GS.
If you have an older iPhone or iPod touch running OS 3.0, you can tilt the phone to match where the real sky is, but you'll have to manually set the direction you're facing.
This changes everything for the novice astronomer. I tried the feature and it worked really well, even though I was near a large metal building. As I turned my phone the display of the sky changed very rapidly to keep up with my movement.
Other nice features from the last version are intact. You can tap the 'locate' button to find any object that is above the horizon. Select it and it centers on the map. Tap a pop-up for more info and you get a quick summary of the object. In the new version of the app a further tap gets you a Wikipedia entry.
You also get a list of meteor showers, lunar phases and a very nice 'tonight's sky' feature that tells you right away what's up and worth seeing.
Some things I'd like to see improved: The app could support finger-pointing to an object to identify it in addition to going to the locate menu, and the Virtual Sky feature is buried in an options menu. I'd like to see an onscreen button to turn it on and off.
The 3GS features are similar to a Celestron product called the Sky Scout that is a dedicated astronomical instrument. The Sky Scout has a lot more information, and audio tours of the skies, but it costs $200.00. If you're really serious about the stars and planets I'd give it a look.
Meanwhile, another favorite astronomy app, Distant Suns [App Store] has been updated recently, and is now on sale for US$3.99. It has added features to the wonderful tour guides and now includes more information about the objects displayed, including travel time at light speed to the planets. It also includes some breathtaking images from the Hubble Space Telescope.
This is the International Year of Astronomy, so it's a great time to get outdoors and look up. It's fun to do, and the iPhone apps really make it a more compelling and educational experience.
Here are some screen shots of Pocket Universe in operation:

You know that scene in Alice in Wonderland where Alice is tumbling down the rabbit hole past all those miscellaneous chairs and birds? That same feeling of confused dread is often how users feel when they're attempting to navigate a site that has never been tested. We know that developers pour their souls into their projects. But that's also why it's sometimes difficult (and even personal) to point out the flaws. A developer has to ask, "Do I want it built my way without compromise or do I want users?" If you want to run a business, rather than spending months speculating on what you think users might want, it's sometimes best to simply ask them.

Launchly is a web application review site where developers can upload screen shots and links and ask for user advice and feedback. Released this past week, Launchly appears to be a beefier version of Feedback Army with the additional abilities to track changes and request multiple rounds of recommendations.

Sponsor

The site allows developers to submit and resubmit their projects in iterations. Each iteration must be at least a week from the last one and new iterations are bumped to the top of the "New Launches" section. This placement in the "New Launches" section prompts user responses via Twitter and RSS. From here, developers gain a new round of suggestions, traffic data and social buzz aggregation. Older iterations are then stored in the "Iteration Archives" for review.

Says Minnesota-based Launchly founder Brian MacManus, "When my own launch day came, I did the typical submissions and SEO stuff but still found myself wondering what people thought of the idea and site in general. I turned to HackerNews and requested feedback there."

MacManus was thrilled with his feedback but unfortunately his post was shortly buried below a slew of other posts. He could resubmit for further discussion, but he'd lose the thread of suggestions he'd already received. In order to track his site changes and show the evolution of his own work, he created Launchly. MacManus is currently charging $40 dollars for the standard launch package and he plans to roll out two additional tiers to incorporate the added features of polls, custom sub-domains and usability testing.

A few companies are already appealing to the Launchly community for feedback including TwitterMass, Tweet Promote and Iconfinder.

The truly interesting part about this service is that it allows reviewers to see sites evolve as per their suggestions. In essence, Launchly creates a sense of ownership and site-loyalty for those who've contributed feedback. While it's too soon to say if the site will take off, it's a great way for developers to gain new insight into the projects they're often too close to. It's also a non-violent and civil way to settle team disputes and make a case for changes to stubborn executives.

Who am I? How did I do this? Well, have a read and you'll find it out.

About Me

Let's make this short so we have more time for the really important stuff. My name is Fredi Bach and well, I made this tool here to learn jQuery and because it's usefull to me and hopefuly someone else, too. I'm from Switzerland and 31 years old. If you need to contact me, use this form.

How did I do this?

The frontend is done with jQuery, the backend with PHP and mySQL. Thx to jQuery and lots of previous php work on various other projects, this whole tool has only taken about two and a half weeks from the first layout sketches to learning jQuery and everything else you see here. Interestingly the whole database design and all the old aggregated feed items are from an other project I'm working on. Additionaly to the jQuery base, I'm using the following jQuery Plugins: Interface (FX-Scroll & FX-Transfer), highlightFade, metadata, cssRadio and cssCheckbox.

What's the general idea?

Well, basicaly this is a feed aggregator. That means it takes the headlines from other sites, mostly blogs and archives them into a database to make them easely searchable even if the original feed was updated. Additionaly to those “normal” features it shares with other good feed aggregators, jMe let's you select feed items and arrange them in a collection. This collection can than be posted to other websites, weblogs or message boards. To make that possible, jMe converts the HTML used to display the feed items into formats like BB Code, Textile, Markdown and other popular markup formats.

What's the future for jMe?

Currently jMe reads a hand selected number of feeds from Apple and Web 2.0 related sites. It is planned for an upcoming version to handle multiple feed selections. However, that version will not be hosted on this server, it will be a project on its own. Will I release the script as open source? Sure, but honestly, don't expect that to happen soon. However, if you're interested in the JavaScript part, feel free to have a look at it.

Can I add a feed of my website or just one I like?

You can try. Just send me the url of the feed and if I think it's a good addition to the current selection, of course I'll add it.

How many views, how many searches, most popular searches and other statistical information can be found here.
